日本では長く使った道具を供養するために、人々が塚や墓を作る慣習があります。「余白書店のバーチャル本棚」は、これにインスピレーションを得て制作された、古本のための本棚です。古本屋でも沢山のメモや書き込みがされた「余白本」は引き取られることなく、いずれその生涯を終えますが、書き込みや手垢がついた本であればあるほど、持ち主にとっては大事な思い出が刻まれているということもできます。そんな読者が生み出した物語を保存、共有するのが、余白書店のバーチャル本棚プロジェクトです。
In Japan, it is customary for people to build mounds or graves to offer long-used tools. The "Virtual Bookshelf for Marginal Books" is a bookshelf for used books inspired by this custom. Books with many notes and writings in the margins will eventually die out without being picked up by used bookstores, but it can be said that the more the book is covered with writings and handwritten marks, the more precious memories it holds for its owner. The project is to preserve and share the stories created by such readers.
木枠とモニターで構成された本棚に、本の背表紙が並んでいます。それらは、様々な人達の協力によって集まった、余白に様々な記憶や痕跡が残された「余白本」たちです。持ち主もバラバラな、様々な人生に関わった本たちが、一つの家族の本棚のように、隣通しで並んでいます。それらの背表紙についているQRコードを読み込むと、人と深く関わって様々な痕跡だらけになった「余白本」の３Dデータが、テキストとともにあなたのスマートフォンに呼び出されます。
本は時間ごとにランダムに入れ替わり、どの本に出会えるかはあなた次第です。
Spines of books are lined up on the bookshelf composed of a wooden frame and a monitor. These are "Marginal books" with various memories and traces left in the margins, gathered with the cooperation of various people. The books, which have different owners and have been involved in various lives, are lined up next to each other like the bookshelves of a family. By reading the QR codes attached to the spines of these books, the 3D data of these "Marginal books," which have been deeply involved with people and are covered with various traces, will be retrieved on your smartphone along with the text.
Books are randomly changed every hour, and it depends on your timing which book you come across.
「余白書店」は、書き込み等がついた古書を、大量生産品である印刷本に対して読者が製作した「一点物の価値ある本=余白本」と再定義し流通させる古本屋プロジェクトです。
Amazonマーケットプレイスと、ブログサービスTumblrを利用し、既存の評価価値からこぼれ落ちてしまう個性的な「余白本」を回収、査定、販売するお店の活動に加えて、ワークショップや展覧会、ポッドキャストやZINEなどの制作もしています。
"Marginal Bookstore" is a secondhand bookstore project that aims to re-define and distribute used books with writing and used traces as " unique and valuable books =Marginal Books" created by readers, as opposed to mass-produced printed books.
Using Amazon Marketplace and the blogging service Tumblr, we collect, evaluate, and sell unique "Marginal Books" that have fallen out of the existing evaluation values, and also produce workshops, exhibitions, podcasts, and zines.

アーティスト。《余白書店》運営メンバーの一人。物語の流通や、語り直しをテーマに制作する。東北に移り住んだことにより、民話や信仰が人の精神のケアと結びついていることに興味を持ち、その現代的なあり方について研究・制作している。
Artist. One of the members of "Margin Bookstore". She creates works on the theme of story distribution and story retelling. After moving to Tohoku, she became interested in the connection between folk tales and beliefs and the care of the human spirit, and has been researching and creating contemporary forms of these tales and beliefs.
